  13. Gift Wrapped for a Ruckus

  15. <p>He sings! He acts! He won't eat cod!

  19. <p>    There is a gentleman with a gun in the street, and he has
  20. come to call. He won't bother with the bell, though. He'll
  21. announce himself by shooting the front door full of holes. The
  22. guy with the gat is Roland Gift, lead singer of a nifty rock
  23. band called the Fine Young Cannibals, and movie star aborning.
  24. In that scene from Scandal, a just opened cinema chronicle of
  25. Britain's Profumo-Keeler scandal of the early '60s, Gift is
  26. doing onscreen the same sort of number he's been running on the
  27. music scene: making a little room for himself and raising a
  28. major ruckus.

  30. <p>    Gift has made his biggest noise on the record charts with
  31. the Cannibals. Their latest album, The Raw & the Cooked, has
  32. sold 3 million copies worldwide since January. The first single,
  33. She Drives Me Crazy, hit No. 1 on the U.S. charts, and a second,
  34. Good Thing, is just breaking. The band also features a couple
  35. of dexterous guitarists, Andy Cox and David Steele, formerly of
  36. the English Beat. But it's Gift everyone is noticing at the
  37. moment. He's got a supple way with a tune, and a promising
  38. presence onscreen.

  40. <p>    That's treacherous turf, rocking and acting. From Elvis to
  41. Sting, one medium seems to undercut the other. But if they can
  42. be reconciled, then Roland Gift has the cool to bring it off.
  43. One wants to retain a little mystery as a performer and steer
  44. clear of typecasting, especially along color lines. In fact, his
  45. father was black and his mother white, but further details of
  46. the family history are dear. The middle child in a family of
  47. five, Gift, 28, grew up in Hull, a small port city in the
  48. industrial north. "My father died when I was very young," he
  49. says. "My mother's a dealer. Not crack. She deals in clothes,
  50. jewelry and other secondhand stuff."
  51. </p>
  52. <p>    Gift would prefer to talk about something else. Swimming,
  53. say. Or fencing, a sport he's just taken up. But questions of
  54. a personal nature are skirted, skimmed, finally finessed. He'd
  55. sooner study the lunch menu. "Do you eat cod?" he asks, looking
  56. up from the day's offerings. "Well, I don't. I eat haddock
  57. instead. Cod is full of worms. I once worked as a fish gutter,
  58. and I was supposed to pick the worms out. That was my job. But
  59. since you had to fill a certain quota of boxes in order to get
  60. paid, you often didn't bother to get all the worms out."

  62. <p>    However he feels around cod, Gift has a smooth, soulful way
  63. around a tune. His voice sounded a little uncertain on a remake
  64. of Elvis' Suspicious Minds, from the first Cannibals album, Fine
  65. Young Cannibals, released in 1985. The sensual assurance Gift
  66. acquired on The Raw & the Cooked may come from some special
  67. attention he has been lavishing on his vocal cords. "I do go to
  68. see someone now and again for guidance about my voice," he
  69. reports. "But it's for moral guidance, because I think there's
  70. more to singing than just songs." A Cannibals tune like I'm Not
  71. Satisfied has an elegant, low-down savor that has little to do
  72. with moral authority, however. It works so nicely, as the album
  73. co-producer David Z. explains, "because it bridges the gap
  74. between pop and alternative music." It also hits home because
  75. of Gift's vocals.

  77. <p>    He can aim high when he sings and still hit below the belt.
  78. His secret is simple, elemental. Even laid-back, he sounds
  79. sexy, an inborn talent that was nurtured by some early
  80. vocational training. "You're talking to someone who used to be
  81. a male stripper," he says. "It was all show business, and it's
  82. probably helped with my presentation." Just so no one gets too
  83. comfy with what to expect of Gift, he has signed up to do a
  84. production of Romeo and Juliet later this year in the north of
  85. England, and is reading the script for a part in a Sylvester
  86. Stallone movie. "I've been asked," Gift reports, "to play one
  87. of his muscles." He smiles. Sure, he'll give it a go. And maybe
  88. be good at it too. There may be a sufficiency of talent, but
  89. there is certainly no time to talk.
